After watching the first 30 minutes of The Great Escape, what did you think worked for the POW's when it came to achieving their goals? What completely backfired?

If you could, what would you suggest to the POW's?

When it comes to achieving a goal, sometimes working by yourself is the easiest way to do it. What are some of the advantages to working alone and what are some advantages to working with a team?

  1. If I could, I would suggest that the pows worked together to find their way out. Like some people find the things about the guard while some find things about the doors and pipes.
Working together makes every single person work less ,in that case it will be more efficient, and the team will come up more ideas than a single person do. But working alone won't have conflict and quarrel with others, so I can follow my own idea and don't have to compromise. Meanwhile, working together can also be misled if the team has no leader or wrong leader.

  2. The benefit of working together means that you have a variety of knowledge and skills. It also helps to have many people because then you are able to do more things that you wouldn't otherwise be able to do with one person. The POW's, had they worked together, would've been more prepared and backed up if something went wrong. One disadvantage with having a group is that if one person is caught, you either have to go back or the plan doesn't work at all. Having only one person, all you have to think about is yourself and might make it a little easier.

  3. I would say it would help if they worked together more. They aren't get far working in small groups. I think that the thing that they are doing the best is being quick and clever with their escape plans. One thing that helps when you do something alone is that you don't have much conflict. But, with teamwork, you can have a bunch of different thoughts that can get a great big, powerful thought or idea that can accomplish a lot.

  4. Sometimes working by yourself is the best way to achieve a goal, and sometimes working in a group is the best way to do this. Working in a group only works well if everyone is focused on achieving the goal, and they're all willing to do their part. If this doesn't happen, then it is better to work individually. In The Great Escape, I think that once the POW's start working together they'll achieve their goal, because they all want to escape and their willing to help each other. Right now they're all just trying to escape individually or in small groups, and they've been unsuccessful. Since they've all escaped before, they all know different ways to do that, and if they combine their knowledge I think they can figure out a way for all of them to escape.

If I could, I would suggest to the POW's that they work together and spend more time planning. As soon as the arrived at the camp they began looking for ways to escape and even attempting to escape, without really thinking it through. Everyone who tried to escape was put in the cooler, keeping them from making real plans of escaping. If they talked about it with everyone they could come up with a really good strategy for escape.
The obvious advantage of working with a team is that the work is shared, lessening the weight on everyone. Also, when there are more people thinking about the same problem, it is more likely that someone will think of a good answer.
But there are advantages to working alone as well. The biggest advantage is that no communication is necessary. The most challenging aspect of working in group is communication between all the members. The larger the group, the harder this is. It is very important that all group members understand exactly what the goal is, and this can be very challenging in a large group. But when you work by yourself, this isn't an issue. Working by yourself also makes it easy to adapt to changes. If anything happens that makes the original course to goal impossible, it is easy to make up a new one. But in a group, it is difficult to make sure everyone understands the change in plans, and also much slower, because everyone has to agree on the new decision.

  6. sometimes working by yourself is good since you don't fight about who the boss however it would looked suspicious if one person was interested in all these things so working with others would throw the guards off

  7. If I were a POW, I would make a system where you would have one main group with everyone in it, and then have smaller groups. and when they hop in the trucks and try to drive out, when they whistled only one should have hopped out and then the rest would drive off. When you have an effective leader it make things much easier. "Big X" in the movie makes the whole thing run much more smoothly.

  8. I think it is good to work by yourself to a certain extent. You can observe things and keep them to yourself while you come up with a plan in your head. I think though, that they should work together more. That would make things go a lot smoothly, even though some of their fellow POWs aren't at that camp. I know they'll escape, but it would be easier if they worked together.
